It's all over now

THAT'S IT! The tourists are almost all gone and the island beats to a different rhythm.. The taverns are shut, the owners and staff will take a well deserved break and take stock of the season. Of course many will say it was ok, others will shrug their shoulders and say iy could have been better.
The nest big event will be time for the harvesting of the thousands of olive trees that Crete is, quite rightly very proud of, and they will be hoping for a bumper crop of liquid gold. Certainly the weather has played it's part, last year the harvest was hit by high winds at the wrong time, and the fruits were damaged. Not so this year, and for those who really count on them for a living it is a vital time of the year.
In all the villages they will be taking stock of the situation ready to act the moment is right to strip the trees and get the crop to the factory, checking the acidity which will determine the quality and of course the price.

Thank you - see you next season / Σας ευχαριστώ - θα δούμε την επόμενη σεζόν!

WE REACHED the end of the traditional Cretan dance and music nights in our village square. Tonight was the last of the season and will return (hopefully) next May/June
The dancers had a great season, not one night had to be cancelled through bad weather and each event resulted in a packed village square.
It's good for the local tavernas of course and actually as it features traditional music and dancing gives the tourists a touch of real Crete, especially those who take full inclusive holidays.
Once again the turn out, remembering that the event is never advertised, was excellent, and the dancers seemed to have enjoyed their long season., Most of them have day jobs, and the dancing is fast and furious - see you next May/June

An arresting sight

NEVER seen so many motorists pleased to slow down and smile at a policeman as today!  Well to be fair it was a pretty girl with very long legs, and in truth she was not a policeman, but handing out flyers for an American Stunt show, dressed as a polieman. Her colleague was stopping the traffic the other direction, but not as a policeman, in a scimnpy yellow outfit instread.   This went on for 30 - 40 minutes until a real policeman turned up to see why traffic thgrough Hersonissos main street was so slow. He spoke to the girls and they - as they say - accompanied him to the station. He obviously wanted to check their creditials as well as take down their particulars!!
